My journey on Howard’s Way started in the summer of 2010.

I was introduced to the programme by a friend of mine who’d lost six stone 2 years ago. That idea in itself was a great inducement, as was seeing her before and after photos and hearing how much happier she was in herself after losing all that weight. She inspired me to attempt it myself. I had always dreamt about what it would be like to achieve a drastic weight loss, to be a size I would finally be happy with.

I went along to meet the staff of Howard’s Way to talk about the programme and to pose any questions I had. After a quick chat with the ‘Locum’, I decided to go ahead and sign up for the initial 3 months of Total Food Replacement, and as I had been referred by a friend, I qualified for a current special offer of a £5 discount per week for the first 6 weeks; as if the weight loss wasn’t enticement enough! I was also excited to hear that there were so many different flavours of soups, shakes and bars to try, and I managed to try each one over the next few weeks. I hate to be predictable but my favourite would have to be the Chocolate and Butterscotch Shakes and the Chocolate Bars.

Whilst the idea of not eating anything for 3 months (except the soups, shakes and bars) might sound a bit drastic, it was not as difficult as I had anticipated. I felt a little tired and quite hungry for the first week as my body got used to the new food regime, but once I became focussed on what I was doing I was never even slightly tempted to cheat. I was only ever really hungry at meal times, despite my initial preconception of how diets always make you hungry! The continual weight loss every week really helped spur me on. On average I lost between three and four pounds per week and the three months went past quite quickly.

A few weeks into it I had already decided to continue on the programme until late November in order to lose the 4.5 stone in time for Christmas. This allowed me to complete the re-feeding process in time to have the traditional feast on Christmas Day with my family. My family were all very impressed with my dedication, which makes me want to maintain my new figure all the more.

I loved surprising my friends when every time I saw them I was slightly thinner. The positive encouragement I have received from all my friends and family was an added bonus to the support that is always there from the whole Howard’s Way team. Not only are they there every step of the way to give you lessons in your diet and the science behind what you’re going through, but they manage to weigh you, chat to you and encourage you in a friendly, and most importantly, non-judgemental way.

They have given me a very sturdy foundation on which to base my new outlook on diet and exercise. I know what I should and shouldn’t eat, and am actually looking forward to maintaining an exercise regime. I am pretty independently spirited, but it is a comfort to know that there is a support network there to help me should I need it. I know a lot of the other dieters in my group benefited even more than I did by having a group of people around them going through the same thing they were. I know I now have the tools to go it alone, but am conscious of the fact there are still weekly “maintenance meetings” I can attend should I wish to.

This process has not only allowed me to actually get to a size I am very happy with, it has taught me a lot about myself. I am stronger than I realised. I have will power when it comes to chocolate, something I never thought I would have! I’ve learnt I can take control of something like my weight that I have always struggled with, and I can win. I have so much more confidence, something which seems to have extended into my professional life, as I’ve had a lot of positive feedback from colleagues. I just hope I can inspire someone the way I was inspired in July last year.

The last six months has been an interesting, sometimes difficult but ultimately massively worthwhile and thoroughly rewarding experience. I know I’ll never be stick thin and will always want to eat more cake than I should, but I have the strength and support I need to be happy within myself. I can’t ask for more than that.
