Did YOU Overdo It This Christmas? Don’t Beat Yourself Up – IT’S NORMAL!
Christmas is a time when we traditionally get together with friends and family to relax and celebrate.
Despite the best of intention every morning when we wake up, calorie watching can go right out of the window the moment anything remotely relating to Christmas touches us. Before we know it we are ‘there’, partaking in the joy of associated memories. Mostly food. (Often food we don’t actually like!)
How many of us eat Mince Pies “because it’s Christmas” when, in reality, they give us indigestion?
Did you pile your plate high with food because at the Christmas table there were so many ‘different things’ to have all at once, (forget ‘meat and two veg’)!
We don’t need to examine the cake, sweets, chocolates; nuts, alcohol, nibbles, because “they don’t really count do they?” No! And the moon really is made of cheese!
Christmas, no matter your religious beliefs is a time for focussing on taking time out to have some quality time with friends and loved ones, so it’s natural for food shared to play a huge part in that, it’s embedded in our culture.
January, the Start of a New Year, is the Most Obvious Time to Go on a Diet
That’s why ‘January’ and the start of a New Year, is the most obvious time to go on a diet and shed the gained weight. It’s also a perfectly ‘natural’ time for those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere.
Traditionally after the summer harvest, we stored food, and by January the weather was at it’s coldest. In October November & December, providing we were not extremely poor, we ate meals high in calories to keep us warm AND put on a bit of fat to act as a blanket against the coming cold. As our ‘stored food’ began to run out, we started to rely more and more on the fat stored on our bodies for the ‘extra’ that we needed to get us through the remains of the winter. This meant that as we used that fat, we became slimmer, so that by the time the Spring came we had shed the extra pounds gained in the Autumn.
Now we are so surrounded by warmth – homes; cars; shops; streets (Malls); clothing; supermarkets full of food all year round, we no longer ‘need’ to stock up and gain pounds to help us survive the winter, but we do still indulge in the celebrations and gatherings that accompanied it all.
Our food never really ‘runs out’ in this day and age, so we have to resort to replicating the ‘lean’ times by cutting back on our intake deliberately to lose any extra pounds gained (dieting!)
So, be confident that starting a diet in January / February is the most natural time for your body to start shedding excess weight!
